Author's Bio

Louise Meriwether was born in Haverstraw, New York, in 1923 and grew up in Harlem during the Great Depression. A novelist, essayist, journalist, and activist, she authored biographies of historically important African Americans for children and is best known for her first novel, Daddy Was a Number Runner (Prentice Hall, 1970).

Meriwether died at the age of 100 on October 10, 2023.
