In addition to having been published over 700 times here on Earth, FERN G. Z. CARR is deeply honored to have one of her poems in permanent orbit around the planet Mars aboard NASA's MAVEN spacecraft.
Carr is a former lawyer, teacher and past President of both the local branch of the BC Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and Project Literacy Central Okanagan Society. She is a Full Member of the League of Canadian Poets and has served as the League's Poet-in-Residence mentoring young writers. A Pushcart Prize nominee, Carr composes and translates poetry in six languages including Mandarin.
Fern also curates her YouTube channel which includes free writing resources: "How To - Writing Prompts (short animations and videos)"; "How To - Free Practical Resources for Poets / Writers & Teachers"; "How To - Poetry Forms Mini-Tutorials"; "Trivia Quizzes, Puzzles and Games"; "Highlights"; "Mandarin Performances, Puzzles, Interviews & More (CC with English translations)"; "Spanish, French, and Italian Poetry (CC with English translations)"; "Poetry Performances"; "Themed Poetry Readings"; "Prose"; and "Interviews".
Carr has been cited as a contributor to India's Prakalpana Literary Movement. Some of her poetry was taught at West Virginia University in addition to having been set to music and performed by a Juno-nominated musician. The Globe and Mail featured Carr in their online arts section in an article entitled "Kudos to Fern G. Z. Carr, poet lawyer". Fern's poem, “I Am”, was chosen by the Parliamentary Poet Laureate as Poem of the Month for Canada.
Her poetry collection, Shards of Crystal (Silver Bow Publishing) is available from Amazon as well as libraries and bookstores worldwide via Ingram ipage. Shards of Crystal has been spotlighted by Poetry Super Highway - a prominent Los Angeles poetry website - as their PSH Bookstore Featured Selection.
In addition to several national and international readings of her poetry, three are of particular note: two readings in Mandarin for the Chinese New Year and Spring Lantern Festivals plus a solo performance at the Rotary Centre for the Arts Mary Irwin Theatre - a beautiful venue seating 326 people. Her photo and reading announcement were displayed downtown on a jumbo outdoor digital reader board for the latter event.
