Stefan Balan is a Romanian-born American living in the Greater Boston area, where he works as an oncologist.
In Romania he published one book of poetry and co-authored a volume of film criticism about Lars von Trier, which received the National Film Critics' award. He founded and edited Clouds Magazine, an international e-zine that ran between 2000 and 2006.
In the US his writings appeared in, among others, Boudin, Pensive, West Branch, Frog Pond, The Bancopa Literary Review, Lifelines, The Red Moon Anthology, Juste millieu. His poetry was published in Australia (Cordite, The Poetry d’Amour Anthology), Sweden (Two Thirds North), India (Kritya), and South Africa (New Contrast).
He is the 2024 recipient of the 3rd Wednesday magazine first prize for poetry and of an honorable mention from Passager Journal. In 2011 his poetry was showcased in "The Vanishing Point That Whistles: An Anthology of Contemporary Romanian Poetry." His essay "Masahide and the Moon" was included in the 2003 Red Moon Anthology, which culls from the best texts related to haiku.
