The Guanajuato Writing Retreat was held from September 22 to September 29 at the Florecer Casitas in Guanajuato, the hilly capital city of Guanajuato state, in Mexico’s high plateau region. The theme for the 2024 retreat was “Renewing Ourselves.” Programming (limited to eight writers) included workshops, a reading with local writers, guided exploratory writing sessions led by poet Bonnie Wolkenstein, local excursions to destinations including La Cañada de la Virgen, and independent time to write for poets, fiction writers, creative nonfiction writers, and translators. The cost of the retreat was $2,295, which included double-occupancy housing, group transportation to and from the airport, meals, workshop fees, and excursion admission fees. Residents were responsible for their own airfare. To apply, writers submitted an online registration form by July 15. Participants were required to submit an electronic copy of vaccine documentation and a valid passport that did not expire within six months of the end of the retreat. Visit the website for more information.
Accessibility accommodations include public transportation near the venue. Alternative programming is available for residents unable to participate in excursions involving hiking. E-mail Florecer Casitas owner Liz Mapelli at lizmapelli@gmail.com for additional accessibility details.
