The 2024 Macondo Writers Workshop was held from July 23 to July 28 at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. The program featured writing workshops, seminars, and free public readings for poets, fiction writers, and nonfiction writers who also identify as social activists. The faculty included poets Richard Blanco and Naomi Shihab Nye, fiction writer Cristina García, and nonfiction writer Cherríe Moraga. The cost of the program, which included meals, was $800 for the workshop fee and $545 for room and board. The cost to attend as a Chuparosa (a returning Macondo writer who wishes to work independently during workshops but participates in all other activities) was $450. Partial scholarships were available with preference given to first-time attendees. Writers with at least two of the following accomplishments were eligible: publication of one or more books or the completion of a book-length manuscript; publication of at least three poems, stories, or works of creative nonfiction in journals or magazines; enrollment in or completion of an MFA program; and/or study with at least three writers. To apply, writers submitted a writing sample of 8 to 10 pages of poetry or prose and a 500- to 800-word response to a short essay question with a $35 application fee by February 18.
