The Academy of American Poets recently announced the finalists for the 2006 Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize. The $25,000 award is given annually for a book of poems published during the previous year.
The finalists, chosen from more than 150 entries, are Christian Barter for The Singers I Prefer (CavanKerry Press), Jack Gilbert for Refusing Heaven (Knopf), Dorianne Laux for Facts About the Moon (Norton), Eleanor Lerman for Our Post Soviet History Unfolds (Sarabande), and Ron Slate for The Incentive of the Maggot (Mariner Books).
The judges for this years prize—Carl Dennis, Tony Hoagland, and Carol Muske-Dukes—will announce the winner in November. Previous winners include John Ashbery, Hayden Carruth, Cid Corman, Thom Gunn, Marilyn Hacker, Donald Hall, Fanny Howe, Stanley Kunitz, Denise Levertov, Philip Levine, W. S. Merwin, Robert Pinsky, Donald Revell, Adrienne Rich, Michael Ryan, and Charles Wright.
