British fiction writer Andrea Levy recently won the Orange Prize for Fiction for her fourth novel Small Island (Review Books). She received £30,000 (approximately $54,900).
Also nominated were Margaret Atwood for Oryx and Crake, Shirley Hazzard for The Great Fire, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie for Purple Hibiscus, Gillian Slovo for Ice Road, and Rose Tremain for The Colour.
The judges were Sandi Toksvig, Karen Cunningham, Baroness Helena Kennedy, Katharine Viner, and Minette Walters.
Sponsored by the mobile phone company Orange, the prize is given annually for the best English-language novel by a female writer.
