A group of sixteen authors, including Michael Chabon, Andrew Sean Greer, Jonathan Lethem, Stephen King, and ZZ Packer, have joined together to auction opportunities to name characters in their forthcoming books on eBay. Proceeds from the auctions will benefit the First Amendment Project (FAP), a “non-profit advocacy organization dedicated to protecting and promoting freedom of information, expression, and petition.”

The winner of each auction can suggest any name that they have the legal right to use, including their own. The current highest bid, for the chance to “let Stephen King kill you in his upcoming book Cell,” is $19,999.

FAP will use the proceeds from the auction to continue providing advice, educational materials, and free legal representation to artists and writers. The auctions, which can be viewed at stores.ebay.com/AuctionCause, will be held until September 25.
