Three months after Dalkey Archive Press announced that it would be moving from its current location in Normal, Illinois, to the University of Rochester, the twenty-two-year old nonprofit publisher of experimental fiction and translations asked to be released from its agreement with the university in upstate New York. A statement released on November 3 by Chad Post, the associate director of Dalkey Archive, cited "unexpected circumstances" leading to the decision.
"Though the press was eagerly looking forward to working with the University of Rochester faculty and students, the press felt that a move to the East Coast was not feasible," read the statement. "Dalkey Archive and the University of Rochester part on amicable terms, and Dalkey Archive thanks the university for its understanding."
As reported in the November/December 2006 issue of Poets & Writers Magazine ("Small Press Points" by Kevin Larimer), Dalkey Archive was scheduled to move to Rochester in January 2007. The press is currently located at Illinois State University, but, according to a report in the New York Sun yesterday, its contract expires on December 31.
Dalkey Archive's Post declined to comment further on the recent decision or on possible plans for the relocation of the press.
