New York University’s graduate school of arts and science recently named poet Deborah Landau as the director of its creative writing program. Landau, who starts work at NYU today, succeeds Melissa Hammerle, who will become a consultant for literary organizations and conferences. The graduate program at NYU offers an MFA degree in both poetry and fiction. Its permanent faculty includes poets Yusef Komunyakaa and Sharon Olds and fiction writers E. L. Doctorow and Paule Marshall.
Landau’s poetry collection, Orchidelirium, won the 2003 Anhinga Prize for Poetry and was published by Anhinga Press in 2004. Her poems have appeared in Antioch Review, Gulf Coast, and Prairie Schooner, among other literary journals. She has a bachelor’s degree from Stanford, a master’s degree in English from Columbia, and a PhD in English from Brown University. She was previously the assistant chair of the creative writing program at the New School University in New York City.
