'Tis the season for year-end "Best of" lists—as evidenced most recently by the New York Times Book Review, which published its list of "Ten Best Books of 2007" in last weekend's issue—and a couple of dictionaries are getting in on the action. The editors of this year's edition of New Oxford American Dictionary recently unveiled their pick for Word of the Year: "locavore," which means someone who eats locally grown food. And Merriam-Webster will announce its own Word of the Year this week. Wordsmiths voted for their favorite word from among twenty candidates on the Merriam-Webster Web site. The list includes "apathetic," "blamestormon," "eleemyosynary," "pugnacious," and "subpoena."
