On August 10, a twenty-first century update on the traditional roving library, the Digital Bookmobile will make its debut in New York City's Central Park, hosted by the New York Public Library. The seventy-four-foot-long, eighteen-wheel bookmobile, equipped with Internet-connected computer workstations, high-definition monitors, and portable media players, will offer the public self-guided tours and demonstrations of how to check out and download e-books, audiobooks, music, and video from their local libraries.
The high-tech trailer will also make New York City appearances in Queens and Brooklyn, and has scheduled stops through September 13 in Boston, Washington, D.C., and Virginia. Each host library will showcase its individual digital catalog in the truck's Video Lounge, Audiobook Alley, Gadget Gallery, and E-book Experience rooms.
The Digital Bookmobile was created by OverDrive, a digital media supplier that serves thousands of libraries in the United States and abroad. The digital collections of libraries participating in the OverDrive network are open online for browsing and downloading at any time.
