Fans of Charles Bukowski are urging the Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission to preserve the house the late poet and novelist rented from 1963 to 1972 in East Hollywood, California. As reported in a recent article in Time magazine, the current owner of the bungalow at 5124 De Longpre Avenue recently evicted the tenants and put the property on the market. An advertisement on Craigslist reads, "You can easily tear down the old building and do new construction!"
A group of Bukowski fans, led by photographer Lauren Everett, argue that the city should give the property landmark status. The house is the setting for some of Bukowsi's poems and novels, and it's where the author met his publisher, John Martin of Black Sparrow Press.
Tomorrow, the historical commission will consider saving the house from demolition.
