A little more than a month after Rebecca Saletan resigned as senior vice president and publisher of adult trade books at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH), the experienced editor has been hired as editorial director of Riverhead Books, the Associated Press recently reported. Riverhead, which is a unit of Penguin Group, publishes authors such as Khaled Hosseini, Junot Díaz, and Aleksandar Hemon.
"I have long admired this publisher, and in a very challenging time in the industry I am so thrilled to be at a house that is a paragon of stability and foresight," Saletan told the AP yesterday.
Saletan, who will begin working at Riverhead on March 2, resigned from HMH less than a year after being promoted to publisher of the unit, which was formed from the merger of Harcourt and Houghton Mifflin in the summer of 2007. Her resignation came on the heals of the company's widely reported financial woes, which resulted in layoffs and restrictions on book acquisitions.
