POETS & WRITERS IS MORE than a magazine. We are a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving creative writers. We pay fees to writers giving readings and leading workshops, provide information and advice to authors, and help them connect with one another and with audiences. We also sponsor a number of awards and prizes. Learn more at pw.org.
Thursdays at Luna’s
If you are in Sacramento, California, on a Thursday evening, be sure to catch Poetry Unplugged at Luna’s Café, a spoken-word series that has been going strong for seventeen years. In October 2012 Poets & Writers supported an event that combined sound tapestries created by sample-master Ruben Reveles, with spoken-word performances and live music. Series cohost Frank Andrick says that in recent years other sources of financial support have dried up. “Without funding from Poets & Writers we would not be able to bring poets in from out of town to read at Luna’s,” he says. “And nothing makes a local poet prouder than to be paid to read—that makes us professionals.” Poets & Writers funds thousands of literary events each year through the Readings/Workshops program, paying writers fees for giving readings and leading writing workshops in California and New York, as well as eight cities outside those states: Atlanta; Chicago; Detroit; Houston, Texas; New Orleans; Tucson, Arizona; Seattle; and Washington, D.C. Our work in California is supported in part by the James Irvine Foundation, with additional backing from the Friends of Poets & Writers.
