John Casey's Writing Desk

In "Beyond the Compass," a profile of novelist John Casey that appears in the November/ December 2010 issue, Joshua Bodwell describes the author's rustic writing shed that sits at the back corner of his property in Charlottesville, Virginia. "Inside the small room is a riot of papers," Bodwell writes. "It is the studio of an undoubtedly busy writer." The main piece of furniture in the room, of course, is Casey's writing desk, where the author wrote his 1989 National Book Award-winning novel Spartina and its followup, Compass Rose, which was published by Knopf last month. We asked Casey to annotate a photograph of the corkboard above the desk.
