This past Sunday was International Women’s Day. The theme for 2015 was “Make it Happen,” a slogan encouraging effective action for advancing and recognizing women. This week, write a poem celebrating the achievements of women. Write about the accomplishments of women in your community, or a woman you think deserves recognition for her strength of character and outstanding achievements.
Find details about every creative writing competition—including poetry contests, short story competitions, essay contests, awards for novels, grants for translators, and more—that we’ve published in the Grants & Awards section of Poets & Writers Magazine during the past year. We carefully review the practices and policies of each contest before including it in the Writing Contests database, the most trusted resource for legitimate writing contests available anywhere.

THE TEACHER
THE TEACHER
Teacher is dedicated
To loyal service
Silver spoon not
Not this lot.
For teacher cared,
More for people,
To see truth
In lessons learned.
The chalk white,
On black board,
Hour glass poured
Sand over time
Into fertile minds
Waiting for knowledge.
Priorities are priorities.
Make a choice.
Teacher began work
On the farm
Plowing the ground.
Dedicated to my mother, Eloise Larry Wright, an award-winning elementary school teacher, mother of 10 biological kids, community service volunteer and active member of her church.
