Each semester noted authors are invited to teach a special class. Recent authors have included Brit Bennett, Timothy Horvath, Casey Plett, Hugh Ryan, Dawnie Walton, De’Shawn Winslow.
The program offers partial funding. A limited number of partial graduate and teaching assistantships are awarded to incoming students.
The program offers an open-genre degree that includes memoir, children’s literature, and screenwriting. Students can take courses on both the Manhattan and Southampton Stony Brook University locations.
The program hosts the annual Southampton Writers Conference, and the reading series Writers Speak. Students have the opportunity to meet individually with agents and teach at Stony Brook University or in area schools through the Young Artists and Writers Project (YAWP).
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, but to be considered for funding, you must apply by January 8. All other applicants for the fall semester should apply by July 15. Spring semester applicants should apply by October 15 and Summer applicants by May 1.
International applicants may only apply for the fall semester, and only as full-time students. The international deadline for all fall admissions (funded and unfunded) is January 15.
