Two publishers in New York—the major house Farrar, Straus and Giroux (FSG) and the independent press BOA Editions—are moving foward in new locales. Neither move is as drastic as Judith Regan's doomed relocation from New York City to Los Angeles in 2005; both publishers have new locations within their hometowns: New York City and Rochester, respectively.
On Wednesday, Publishers Weekly reported that FSG will be leaving its offices on Union Square in Manhattan, where the publisher has been since 1961, and moving just a few blocks west, to West 18th Street. "We've been thinking about it for probably a year and a half or so," FSG president Jonathan Galassi was quoted as saying. "When leases loom, you have to start thinking." The move is planned for the end of the year. FSG is an imprint of Holtzbrinck Publishers, along with St. Martin's Press, Henry Holt, Picador, and others.
Meanwhile, in a much less publicized move, BOA Editions relocated its offices in upstate New York. For ten years the indie was housed in offices above Arena's Florist on East Avenue in Rochester, but in April the press moved to a new space in the Anderson Alley building on North Goodman Street. "We had outgrown our previous space several years ago," BOA's executive director Nora A. Jones says. "This move pumps new enthusiasm into our work environment."
