The 22nd annual Under the Volcano Master Classes and Guided Residency will be held from January 10, 2025, to January 25, 2025, in Tepoztlán, Mexico, a village located one hour south of Mexico City. The program features master classes in poetry and fiction, as well as individual meetings with instructors, weekly open mics, readings, and conversations with guest writers and scientists. Classes in all genres are offered both in Spanish and English. The faculty includes poets Cyrus Cassells and Aracelis Girmay and fiction writers Jennifer Clement, Tommy Orange, and Ayşegül Savaş. Tuition is $2,695 and includes all program activities. Housing and most meals are not included. Lodging is available in private hotel rooms that range in cost from $40 to $60 per night with breakfast included. All applicants must submit an online application form, a cover letter, and a writing sample in either English or Spanish. To apply for regular admission, writers submitted 8 to 10 pages of poetry or prose; to apply for a full fellowship, writers submitted an extended writing sample of 25 pages, a curriculum vitae, a cover letter, and two reference letters. A limited number of partial scholarships based on financial need were available. Regular admission was accepted on a rolling basis; the application deadline for a full fellowship was September 3.
