The program offers full funding, which includes a stipend and complete tuition scholarship for the duration of the program.
While a separate workshop in nonfiction is not offered, writers in the genre are accepted, and the prose workshop regularly addresses both fiction and nonfiction. A number of MFA theses have been in nonfiction.
The program hosts a reading series, as well as opportunities to participate in outreach at local schools, justice centers, and community organizations. Students are also offered opportunities in editorial work for Action Books or the Notre Dame Review.
Second-year MFA students are eligible for one of four prizes: the Sparks Prize (which provides a post-graduation year of residency and writing time), the Center for Social Concerns International Justice Poetry Fellowship (which provides a post-graduation year of residency and writing time), the Mitchell Award, and the Hazo Poetry Award.
