The 29th annual Vermont College of Fine Arts (VCFA) Postgraduate Writers’ Conference was held from August 3 to August 9 on the Champlain College campus in Burlington, Vermont. Designed for writers with graduate degrees or equivalent experience, the conference featured workshops in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction, as well as readings, craft talks, and one-on-one consultations with faculty members. Each workshop was limited to five or six participants. The faculty included poets Eduardo C. Corral, Kathleen Graber, A. Van Jordan, Emilia Phillips, and David Wojahn; fiction writers Steve Almond, Andre Dubus III, Tayari Jones, Ellen Lesser, and Lee Martin; and creative nonfiction writers Paul Lisicky, Dinty W. Moore, Sue William Silverman, and Clifford Thompson. The tuition for all workshops was $1,115, except for the poetry manuscript workshop, which was $1,295. The cost of on-campus housing was $400. The full conference meal plan was $295. Partial scholarships were available; to apply, writers submitted a five-page writing sample, a personal statement, and a letter explaining financial need via e-mail. Applications were accepted on a rolling basis. Visit the website for more information.
