Barnes & Noble, Inc. recently announced the winners of the 2005 Discover Great New Writers Awards. Uzodinma Iweala won in fiction for his novel Beasts of No Nation (HarperCollins) and Nathaniel Fick won in nonfiction for his memoir One Bullet Away (Houghton Mifflin). They each received $10,000 and a full year of additional marketing and advertising support at Barnes & Noble bookstores.
The second-place winners were Kitty Fitzgerald for her novel Pigtopia (Miramax Books), and Martin Moran for his memoir The Tricky Part (Beacon Press). They each received $5,000.
The judges in fiction were Carrie Brown, Howard Frank Mosher, and Samrat Upadhyay. The judges in nonfiction were Debra Dickerson, James Frey, and Tom Groneberg.
The awards are given annually to “honor works of exceptionally talented writers” featured in the Discover Great New Writers program during the previous year. Past winners include Monica Ali, Tracy Chevalier, and Chang-rae Lee.
