Malachy McCourt, the creative nonfiction writer, actor, and brother of Angela’s Ashes author Frank McCourt, recently announced that he is seeking the Green Party nomination to run for governor of New York. A native of Brooklyn who was raised in Ireland, McCourt posted a message on his Web site stating that his platform will include promoting peace, seeking the abolition of the death penalty, and ending the use of nuclear energy.
The other candidates seeking the office, now held by departing two-term Republican Governor George Pataki, include Democrats Eliot Spitzer and Tom Suozzi, and Republicans John Faso and Bill Weld. The election will take place on November 7.
In addition to collaborating on three books with his brother, McCourt has published the memoirs Singing My Him Song (HarperCollins, 2000) and A Monk Swimming (Hyperion, 1998), and appeared in the movies The Devil's Own, Green Card, and in the HBO prison series Oz.
