Chard deNiord

Chard deNiord is a former poet laureate of Vermont (2015-2019) and author of seven books of poetry, including In My Unknowing (The University of Pittsburgh Press, 2020), Interstate, (The University of Pittsburgh Press, 2015), The Double Truth (University of Pittsburgh Press, 2011), which the Boston Globe named one of the top ten books of poetry in 2011, Night Mowing (University of Pittsburgh Press, 2005), Sharp Golden Thorn (Marsh Hawk Press, 2002) and Asleep In The Fire (University of Alabama Press, 1900). He taught English and Creative Writing at Providence College from 1998 to 2020, where he is now Professor emeritus of English. His book of essays and interviews with seven senior American poets (Galway Kinnell, Donald Hall. Maxine Kumin, Jack Gilbert, Ruth Stone, Lucille Clifton, Robert Bly) titled Sad Friends, Drowned Lovers, Stapled Songs, Conversations and Reflections on 20th Century American Poets was published by Marick Press in 2012 and his follow-up volume of interviews with nine eminent mid-career and senior American poets (Carolyn Forche, Natasha Trethewey, Stephen Sandy, Galway Kinnell, Ed Ochester, Jane Hirshfield, Peter Everwine, Martin Espada, Stephen Kuusisto, and Anne Wright, James Wright’s widow) titled I Would Lie To You If I Could was published by The University of Pittsburgh Press in 2018. His poems have appeared in The Kenyon Review, Ploughshares, The Antioch Review, the American Poetry Review, The American Scholar, New Ohio Review, Green Mountains Review, The New Republic, and The New York Times and others. He is the co-founder with Jacqueline Gens and Gerald Stern of the New England College MFA Program in Poetry where he also served as the program director, a founder and former trustee of the Ruth Stone Foundation and Trust, and co-producer of the new Ruth Stone film titled Ruth Stone’s Vast Library of the Female Mind. He lives in Westminster West, Vermont with his wife Liz Hawkes deNiord.
