Author's Bio

Award-winning author of more than fifty published short stories, David Borofka, explores the relationship of spirituality with sexuality, religion with the deceptions of piety. Elizabeth Gaffney, writing in The New York Times Book Review, observes, “Moments of giddy redemption leaven the woes of Mr. Borofka’s characters, but the real miracle is the deftness, subtlety and humor with which he makes their many bedeviled lives cohere in a single vision of well-earned affirmation.” His work has earned such awards as the Missouri Review’s Editors’ Prize and Carolina Quarterly’s Charles B. Wood Award for Distinguished Writing while his collection, Hints of His Mortality, won the 1996 Iowa Short Fiction Award. His novel, The Island, was published by MacMurray & Beck, portions of which appeared in Gettysburg Review and Shenandoah. New work has recently appeared in ImageSouthern ReviewManoa, and Glimmer Train. His collection of stories, A Longing for Impossible Things, was published by Johns Hopkins University Press in 2022 and won the American Fiction Award for the Short Story by American Book Fest. His latest novel, The End of Good Intentions, was published in 2023 by Fomite Press. A new collection of stories, The Bliss of Your Attention, will be published in 2025, once again by JHUP.
