Don MacLaren’s articles, commentary, letters, stories and poems have appeared in TIME, Newsweek (International), BusinessWeek (International), The Japan Times, Japan Today, The Tenderloin Times, Danse Macabre, Haight Ashbury Literary Journal, Wilderness House Literary Review, The Write Place at the Write Time, Mr. Beller's Neighborhood and other publications. Much of MacLaren's published writing concerns the Kafkaesque trials and tribulations he went through as both plaintiff and defendant in Japan's civil court system. MacLaren has worked as a teacher, writer, translator (Japanese and Spanish to English), stock brokerage employee at an institutional trading desk, cab driver, construction worker, counterperson (at Caffe Trieste in San Francisco's North Beach neighborhood), bartender and butcher, as well as at other positions. Some of the places he has called home are: Japan, China, Guatemala, Colombia, New York City, Dallas, San Diego, Oakland and San Francisco. He spent the first 19 years of his life in Detroit and Grand Rapids, Michigan - whereupon he joined the US Navy to escape Michigan and his dead-end factory job. He is a graduate of City College of San Francisco (AS, Film Production, Valedictorian, 1988) and UC Berkeley (BA, English, Honor Students' Society, 1990).
