Author's Bio

I’m the author of seven books – three memoirs, two novels, and two collections of poetry.

My recent memoir, Child, was named a Katie Couric Media Must-Read Book for 2022 and was a finalist for the Southern Book Prize in nonfiction from the Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance. Together: A Memoir of a Marriage and a Medical Mishap was named one of the best books of 2019 by Real Simple magazine and is an Editors’ Pick on Amazon. It received a starred review from Library Journal.

 

My work has appeared in The Washington Post, The Charlotte Observer, USA Today, Real Simple, LitHub; in literary journals, such as The Southern Review, Gettysburg Review, Kenyon Review, Ohio Review, Black Warrior Review, Crazyhorse, Shenandoah, Prairie Schooner; and in numerous anthologies.

 

My awards include the Fortner Writer & Community Award for “outstanding generosity to other writers and the larger community,” Hobson Award for Distinguished Achievement in Arts & Letters, Irene Blair Honeycutt Lifetime Achievement Award from Central Piedmont Community College, Roanoke-Chowan Poetry Prize, Oscar Arnold Young Poetry Prize, Zoe Kincaid Brockman Poetry Prize, Gerald Cable Poetry Prize from Silverfish Review Press, Sir Walter Raleigh Fiction Award and Mary Ruffin Poole Award for First Fiction from the N.C. Literary and Historical Association.
