Author's Bio

I draw cartoons, write nonfiction/poetry/YA fiction, and love to work in blended genres/media. My work explores the bond and struggles between people and all else around them. Publications include the nonfiction book A Land Between (Johns Hopkins U Press, 2000), brief essays in Brevity and The New Nature, and the poem "Night Dive Off San Miguel Island,” anthologized in No Place Else But Here. I've written a four-book YA series (not yet published) about how far love can fling us through time and space. These stories unfold in alternative universe versions of the Bay Area, Sedona and Phoenix between 1961 and 2050.

My finished Manuscript for By the Forces of Gravity (looking for publisher) is a cartoon/verse memoir of friendship cut short by murder. Ariel Gore, author of The End of Eve, called the manuscript "fucking amazing, destroy-you-in-a-good-way amazing." Berkeley Professor and author of upcoming Cartooning the Landscape," Chip Sullivan says it is "a visually and emotionally compelling coming-of-age classic."

I have an MFA in creative writing from Arizona State University and degrees in mathematics and landscape architecture from UC Berkeley. I’m an associate professor of landscape architecture in The Design School within the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at ASU.
