Author's Bio

I am the author of the novels "Killoyle," "The Great Pint-Pulling Olympiad," "Killoyle Wine and Cheese," and "The Adorations," as well as of numerous essays, reviews, and short stories. My work has been compared to that of James Joyce (by The Village Voice, and others) and Flann O'Brien (by The Irish Emigrant, and others). Harvey Pekar called "Killoyle" one of the finest of recent novels; Steven Moore said that "Olympiad" was a "splendid novel in every way." I now live near Austin, Texas. I spent a good part of my childhood and youth in New York, Dublin, Paris, and Geneva, and received a respectable education at the hands of Life, as well as from the University of Ulster and the University of Edinburgh. I am a contributor to periodicals online and off, including The New York Times Book Review, Boston Review, The Economist, Autosavant, and Context. I am currently seeking an English-language publisher for "Killoyle Wine and Cheese," the third of my three "Killoyle" novels (all three have appeared in German translation) and for "The Adorations," my magnum opus, a "novel in double time" that moves like a fugue through the history of 20th century Europe.
