Author's Bio

Individual poems have appeared in New Ohio Review, Hotel Amerika, The Hudson Review, The Antioch Review, Ploughshares, Plume and The New Yorker. My ms. "Open 24 Hours" won The Blue Lynx Poetry Prize and was published by Lynx House Press in 2014. I have an interest in Noir -- film noir and the poem noir -- and my essay "(Never)Out of the Past: Noir and the Poetry of Lynda Hull" appeared in The Los Angeles Review of Books. My defining essay, "The Poem Noir--Too Dark to Be Depressed," was published by New Mexico's Malpais Review. I am co-publisher of a new imprint, The Pacific Coast Poetry Series/ Beyond Baroque Books, and editor of its first publication, "Wide Awake: Poets of Los Angeles and Beyond," named of the 10 best books of the year in The Los Angeles Times' year-end issue. I have taught for many years through the UCLA Extension Writers' program, poetry workshops beginning through advanced, as well as special focus courses on the persona poem and the poem noir. Poetry.la produces my series on film noir and the poets influenced by this sensibility, "They Write by Night," accessible at poetry.la ("Themed Series") and on YouTube.
