Assistant Teaching Professor of English (preferred specialization in poetry)

The College of Arts and Sciences at Rockhurst University invites applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor of English to teach primarily first-year composition—and creative writing in poetry, as needed. The position is a full-time, ranked, non-tenure-track appointment that is renewable and promotion-eligible. The position carries a 21-credit hour teaching load and includes responsibilities to assist with administering the undergraduate writing program, and teaching composition, along with creative writing (poetry) and literature in areas of expertise as needed. The ideal candidate will have a creative and research-based approach to teaching composition, a strong interest and background in writing pedagogy, and the desire to support other instructors to develop their skills.

The successful applicant will join a dynamic team of English faculty committed to enhancing the diversity and inclusiveness of the campus community and the curriculum. Candidates who can contribute to this goal in their teaching and scholarly work are encouraged to apply and identify their strengths and experiences in these areas. The successful candidate must have the ability to work effectively with students, staff and faculty from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds. The position will begin in August of 2025. 

Qualifications:  

Required  

The candidate must:  

  • Hold a terminal degree in English or related field from an accredited university  
  • Have teaching experience at the university level  
  • Have excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills  

Preferred  

The candidate will:  

  • Hold a terminal degree in rhetoric, composition, creative writing, or related field from an accredited university. Ph.D. preferred. 
  • Possess at least 3 years teaching experience at the university level  
  • Have experience teaching with technology or with online education  
  • Have a demonstrated record of continued professional development, scholarship, and service  
  • Have an understanding of and appreciation for the Jesuit tradition and for Catholic higher education
