Established in 1982 by Emoke B’Racz and located in downtown Asheville, Malaprop’s is an independent bookstore and café that serves food from local bakeries and organic, fair-trade, shade-grown coffee roasted locally. The café offers free wireless service and eight plug-in stations, plus three cyber stations that customers can use for a fee. As part of its mission, the bookstore gives back to the local community by donating to local nonprofits, independent radio stations, and homeless shelters. It also hosts over thirty events a month, including author readings, workshops, and a selection of theme-based book clubs. The café accommodates 125 people and over 200 with seating extended into the bookstore.
