Literary Arts

Literary Arts is a community-based nonprofit literary center located in downtown Portland, with a thirty-year history of serving Oregon’s readers and writers. Programs include Portland Arts & Lectures, one of the country’s largest lecture series; Oregon Book Awards & Fellowships, which celebrates Oregon’s writers and independent publishers; and Writers in the Schools, which hires professional writers to teach semester-long creative writing workshops in Portland’s public high schools.

theOffice

theOffice was created to provide a comfortable and inspirational work environment for creative professionals. This writing space was designed by Serena Walther Leventhal and Tony Schubert with Feng Shui by Master David Cho.

Access to theOffice requires a membership, but free passes are available to first-timers as well as a discounted one-month trial. Amenities include complimentary coffee and tea, a refrigerator, ergonomic furniture, Wi-fi, Bose Noise Reduction Headphones, and a reference library featuring dictionaries, thesauri, reference books, magazines, and newspapers.

Title Wave Books

Founded in 1991, Title Wave Books is located in the Northern Lights Center of Anchorage, Alaska. This independent bookstore and Internet cafe features thirty thousand square feet of books and music. The store buys used books, DVDs, CDs, and audio books. Hours are Monday through Saturday 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM, and Sunday 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM.

Paragraph

Paragraph is a membership organization that provides affordable workspace for writers in New York City. Facilities include a comfortable desk, all the coffee and tea you can drink, fast Wi-Fi, free printing, writing-related events every month, and a community of like-minded writers. 

WriterHouse

The mission of WriterHouse is to promote the creation and appreciation of literature and to encourage the development of writers of all levels by providing an affordable, secure workspace and meeting space, high-quality writing instruction, and literary events for the public.

Writers’ Room of Boston

The Writers’ Room of Boston is a welcoming and supportive community, workspace and virtual presence for writers in all genres. Founded in 1988, the workspace houses 10 working carrels and an office meeting room. It is located in a secure and accessible building in the heart of downtown Boston that is available to members, 24x7 every day and augmented by a vital virtual presence. The Room sponsors fellowships which provide a year of free access to emerging writers, but as a matter of policy no committed writer is turned away for financial need.

Writers Room

Located in downtown Manhattan, The Writers Room is a nonprofit urban writers’ colony that provides writers with affordable workspace in New York City. Members enjoy high-speed internet access, storage for computers and materials, a separate kitchen lounge and occasional engaging literary events. 

Attic Institute

Established in 1999, the Attic Institute offers writing workshops; five-month fellowships that provide guidance in both craft and publishing; and the Attic Atheneum, an annual certificate program that is an alternative to the MFA program. The Attic also rents out writers studios.

New Hampshire Writers’ Project

Located on the campus of Southern New Hampshire University, the New Hampshire Writers’ Project is a statewide membership-based nonprofit literary arts organization that serves as a resource for writers, publishers, booksellers, literary agents, educators, librarians, and readers in and near New Hampshire. It hosts the annual Writers’ Day writing conference; the Concord Book Festival; Writers’ Night Out, a monthly gathering of writers in various regions throughout the state; the biennial New Hampshire Literary Awards; and workshops on a variety of topics, ranging from craft to promotion.
