Students attend two ten-day residencies each year, in December and June. The December residency is held at the Atlantic Center for the Arts in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. The June residency is held abroad. International residency locations include San Miguel de Allende, Mexico (2016); Santiago, Chile (2017); Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (2018); and Buenos Aires, Argentina (2019). Upcoming locations include Mexico City, Mexico (2022).
The poetry track of the program, Poetry in the Expanded Field, is one of the few low-residency MFA curriculums committed to experimentation and interdisciplinary work. MFA students have worked in dance, photography, video, social media, short prose forms, and graphic design. The prose track welcomes fiction, creative nonfiction, speculative work, and hybrid narratives.
Applications are accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis. Students can apply anytime before the deadline to start in January at the Atlantic Center for the Arts in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, or in June at an international location. Applications received after the deadline will be considered for next start date.
Application deadlines are September 1 for January start, and February 1 for June start.
