The program offers teaching, research, and administrative assistantships. The program fully funds some, but not all students.
The program also offers tutoring positions; editorial positions at Bayou Magazine and UNO Press; positions with the Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival, Greater New Orleans Writing Project, the Neighborhood Story Project, and other organizations. Internship opportunities are also available.
The program also offers degrees in playwriting and encourages cross-genre study. Students can take a Publishing Lab course, where they work on a title that will be published by UNO Press and learn everything from manuscript edits to book design to layout to internet marketing.
The program hosts frequent visiting writers, weekly outings to pubs, and a student-run monthly reading series. Other features include opportunities to work with Bayou Magazine. The program also participates in the Tennessee Williams Festival, Words and Music, and Faulkner for All festivals.
