“The resilient founders established the school, that they polished into a beautiful jewel.” Irene Hicks, a South Carolina native and poet living with Parkinson’s disease, reads her poem to commemorate her alma mater the Mather School, a school created by Rachel Crane Mather for the daughters of liberated slaves in the late 1860s. Brookdale Senior Living and Colorado nonprofit Wish of a Lifetime partnered with Essity to provide resources for Hicks to write her poem and continue to teach poetry to seniors.
