Poets & Writers relies on the support of writers—and readers—like you. Your tax-deductible donation will impact thousands of writers by supporting programs like these:
Readings & Workshops, which pays mini-grants to writers and connects them with audiences throughout California and New York State. We award $250,000 a year and support an average of 30 events every week!
Get the Word Out, a publicity incubator that gives early career authors expert guidance in marketing and publicity to launch their careers and reach readers.
Fee waivers to our popular Online Classes that demystify the publishing process and help writers deepen their craft—to ensure that a range of writers, including those from historically underrepresented communities, can benefit.
Free subscriptions to Poets & Writers Magazine for hundreds of high school students and creative writing teachers nationwide.
Authoritative resources on pw.org that connect the writing community and democratize access to information about how to get published.
And much more.
Make a Contribution
With your contribution of $250 or more, we are happy to offer a complimentary one-year membership at the Premium level, which includes both the print and digital editions of Poets & Writers Magazine, plus full digital access to pw.org. (Valued at $50.)
Join the Patrons Cirle
With an annual contribution of $1,000 or more, you will receive invitations to intimate author events twice a year. You’ll hear top-notch writers read from their work and have an opportunity to talk with them about how they work and what motivates them to write. You’ll share food and drink—and great conversation—with others who care about good writing.
Donate Stock
Appreciated securities can be contributed outright, designated as a bequest, or used to fund a charitable trust.
By making a gift of publicly traded stock that you have held more than a year and that has grown in value, you may achieve significant tax savings. Conversely, careful consideration is advised before donating stock that has lost value, as by doing so you may forfeit a valuable tax deduction. Consultation with a qualified financial advisor is recommended.
For instructions on transferring stocks to Poets & Writers, please contact Rachel Schuder, Director of Development & Communications (or ask your broker to do so) at development@pw.org or by phone at 212-226-3585 x201.
Join the Legacy Circle
Those who have established bequests and other planned gifts for Poets & Writers become members of the Legacy Circle. These donors are recognized in our annual report and are accorded lifelong benefits.
Some examples of planned giving opportunities follow. If you have questions about the Legacy Circle, creating a bequest or trust, other forms of planned giving, or if you are interested in establishing a named fund, we'd be happy to talk with you. Please contact Rachel Schuder, Director of Development & Communications, at 212-226-3586 x201 or by email at development@pw.org.
Establish a Bequest
A bequest can be established simply by including language such as the following in your will: “I give and bequeath [$x (dollar amount) or x% (percentage) of my estate] to Poets & Writers, Inc. located at 90 Broad Street, Suite 2100, New York, New York 10004 for the organization’s general purposes.”
Donate Life Insurance
Substantial charitable gifts can be made through life insurance. You may choose to give a paid-up policy that is no longer needed to provide for your heirs. Such a gift entitles you to a tax deduction, which may be equal to the policy's surrender value. A new insurance policy purchased to endow a legacy for Poets & Writers can also create a substantial gift, entitling you to tax deductions for premiums paid by you.
Create a Charitable Trust
In addition to helping Poets & Writers continue to serve writers in the future, establishing a charitable trust may help to satisfy your financial or estate-planning needs, preserve assets left to heirs, and provide important tax benefits and ongoing income. We urge you to consult with qualified financial and legal advisors to determine how to structure your giving to meet your estate-planning and philanthropic goals.
