My background is in journalism, and I mostly write creative nonfiction, both personal and journalistic essays. I've written two memoirs and am now working on a novel.

I'm a MacDowell Fellow; won the San Francisco Foundation award for Nonfiction; was nominated for a Pushcart Prize. My essay "Inspiration Point," from Crazyhorse, was recognized by Christopher Hitchens in the 2010 Best American Essays anthology 2010.
