Born in Chicago and grew up in Ohio, Michigan, Connecticut, North Carolina, and New Hampshire.  BA in English (cum laude) University of North Carolina, Charlotte. (1978-1980).  MFA in Writing  from (then) Vermont College (1983-1985)  (now Vermont College of Fine Arts)
