For over forty years, owner and author Jim Reed has procured the obscure items in this unique bookstore in downtown Birmingham, Alabama. Thank You Books is a women-owned independent bookstore in Birmingham, Alabama. Their inventory includes contemporary works of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry, as well as selections for young readers, and their website includes a wish list for books donated to incarcerated individuals in Alabama and Texas. Water Street Bookstore

Water Street Bookstore is the largest independent bookstore in the seacoast region of New Hampshire. Opened in 1991, the bookstore is located in the town of Exeter and carries new and used books in all genres. Burnt Books is a bookshop located inside a bodega called Green Discount in the neighborhood of Greenpoint in Brooklyn, New York. It specializes in second-hand sci-fi, mystery, art, design, politics, and books about New York. 

To find it, head to the address, look for the graffiti-like sign that reads “Burnt Books” on the sidewalk by the bodega’s entrance, walk to the back, and get ready to purchase some vintage paperbacks.

Troubled Sleep

Troubled Sleep, a name shared with a novel by Jean-Paul Sartre, is a new and used bookstore located in the historic district of Park Slope in Brooklyn, New York. The store carries a wide variety of quality books at low prices and specializes in literary fiction both classic and contemporary. They also carry drama, poetry, and smaller sections of New York City history, art, architecture, and kids’ books. The shop is lined with nearly floor-to-ceiling wooden bookcases and has eye-catching mosaic tiles on the floor. It is open seven days a week.

Located in Chinatown, Manhattan, Yu and Me Books is a bookstore that showcases immigrant stories and creates a home for the community. It is the first female, Asian-American owned bookstore in New York City. The initials of the bookstore, YM, are the owner’s mother’s initials and represent the stories that have been passed down to them for generations.

P&T Knitwear

P&T Knitwear is a family-owned independent bookstore, podcast studio, event space, and cafe in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. The name dates back to the knitwear store the founder’s grandfather Hymie Tusk and his business partner Mike Pudlo started in 1952, after surviving the Holocaust and emigrating to New York City.
