City Lights Bookstore is in Sylva, North Carolina, on a Main Street town tucked in the heart of the southern Appalachian Mountains. Their goal is to share the literature of the region with the world, and the world of books with their community.

Chapter and Verse is an established literary reading series that takes place at the Revolutionary War-era Loring Greenough House in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, a neighborhood of Boston. Three selected writers of fiction or poetry read for the crowd of about forty, followed by refreshments and book signings. Although readers are not paid, the sponsor of Chapter and Verse, Jamaica Pond Poets, purchases a book from each reader and donates it to the Jamaica Plain Branch of the Boston Public Library. Readings are usually the second Friday of each month from October through June.
The Central Library branch of the Seattle Public Library regularly hosts lectures, author readings and signings, book clubs, discussion groups, presentations and panels, storytime for grown-ups, reading series, and more.
Founded in 1954 on the basis of a small donation by W. H. Auden, the Poetry Center presents some thirty public readings, performances, and lectures each year on the San Francisco State University campus and at various off-campus venues, featuring outstanding poets and writers from across the literary spectrum. The Poetry Center reading series is one of the longest-running such programs in the country, with roots in the 1950s San Francisco Poetry Renaissance.
University of Massachusetts Amherst hosts the Visiting Writers Series among other literary events including lectures, talks, and panel discussions with faculty, students, and visiting writers.
Beginning in spring 2007, the New York University Creative Writing Program launched a series of intimate salons at the newly dedicated Lillian Vernon Creative Writers House. Students responded with enthusiasm to the events, especially to the informal atmosphere that encouraged conversations with writers whose work they admired. In a typical week, graduate courses are offered Monday through Wednesday, and readings are held Thursday and Friday evenings.

The Barnes & Noble bookstore at the West Towne Mall in Madison, Wisconsin, is open seven days a week and hosts a variety of author events including readings, discussions, and book signings.
Third Place Books hosts over one thousand free public events every year. The bookstore has a large public commons, five restaurants, free wireless internet, a community room, and a stage.
Events and the public area within Third Place Books are managed by a community organization, Friends of Third Place Commons, and supported by Third Place Books, the City of Lake Forest Park, and the merchants and management of the Town Center at Lake Forest Park.
