University of Colorado Boulder’s Creative Writing Program

Each year, the Creative Writing MFA Program located in the University of Colorado Boulder’s Department of English hosts the Creative Writing Reading Series to bring innovative writers to the university for a free, on-campus reading. Past readers include National Book Award winner Terrance Hayes, Susan Steinberg, CAConrad, Ronaldo Wilson, Brian Evenson, Lynne Tillman, Claudia Rankine, M. NourbeSe Philip, and Pulitzer Prize winner Rae Armantrout.

The Book House in Dinkytown

The Book House offers the increasingly-rare opportunity to browse a large stock of used and rare books, hang out, read, write, invite friends to meet, and talk with fellow book lovers. In addition to their store stock, their online book archive of over forty thousand books can be searched through their catalog site.

Denver Public Library: Central Branch

Since 1995, the Denver Public Library Central branch has been the largest library between Los Angeles and Chicago. Central Library is located next to the Denver Art Museum and has its own art collection. Designed by postmodern architect Michael Graves, the library features a coffee shop and is home to several book clubs.

Busboys and Poets: 14th and V

With nine locations, Busboys and Poets is proud to be a venue that provides space and support for poets and spoken word performers and interested audiences. From the cozy atmosphere of the “Sunday Kind of Love” poetry series to the high intensity of the 11th Hour Poetry Slam, you will find a poetry event that will spark your creative side and leave you inspired. They have hosted several world renowned poets for readings, including Amiri Baraka, Nikki Giovanni, Alice Walker, Suheir Hammad, Rita Dove, Sonia Sanchez, Elizabeth Alexander and Denis Brutus.

Broadway Book Mall

Broadway Book Mall is an independent bookstore, run by the former owners of the Denver Book Mall, in its current location on South Broadway since 2009. The bookstore hosts frequent author talks and signings, literary readings, and other local community events throughout the year.

Hunter College’s Creative Writing Program

Hunter College presents the Distinguished Writers Series, one of the signal components of the Hunter Creative Writing Program. It has a rich history and continuing tradition of presenting intimate readings and class visits to their MFA seminars from the leading voices in contemporary fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction.

AvantGarden

AvantGarden draws patrons both from surrounding Montrose and Museum District neighborhoods in Houston and from afar with its plethora of nightly events. They host Write About Now’s weekly poetry slam and open mic series every Wednesday night from 7:30 PM to 10:30 PM.

Every Thing Goes Book Cafe & Neighborhood Stage

ETG Book Cafe is the largest (and only!) used bookstore in Staten Island. It has a well-organized and diverse book collection, spanning all three rooms of the store. It also sells some new books: recently-published books, some books about Staten Island, and some by local authors. It has an excellent children’s book corner, some vintage and collectible books, as well as a few “antiques.”

Paulina Springs Books

Paulina Springs Books in Sisters, Oregon, hosts in-person and virtual author events throughout the year, featuring everything from literary fiction to mystery and science fiction, from nature writing to memoir and history and spaces in between. Books can be purchased in store or online, and audiobooks can also be purchased through their website. The shop donates 1 percent of annual gross sales to organizations that support local, regional, national, and global communities.
