Carmichael’s Bookstore: Clifton/Crescent Hill

Carol Besse and Michael Boggs opened the first location of Carmichael’s Bookstore in 1978, and Carmichael’s has been owned and operated by them ever since. The branch on Frankfort Avenue opened in 2003 and hosts frequent author readings and signings, panel discussions, and other literary events.

Mystery To Me

Mystery to Me offers a wide selection of everything from cozies and historical mysteries to thrillers and police procedurals. In addition to mystery, they have a small non-mystery nook along with a growing selection of work by local authors that includes everything from poetry to memoir. There is also a growing selection of children and young adult titles. 

Midtown Scholar Bookstore

Midtown Scholar is the largest academic bookstore in Pennsylvania, with over one million books in their Harrisburg warehouse and storefront. The bookstore also hosts a variety of events, including: author readings, book clubs, and musical performances.

Brattle Book Shop

Brattle Book Shop is one of America’s oldest and largest used bookstores. It features two floors of general and used books, a third floor of rare and antiquarian books, and an outside sale lot. Brattle Books also hosts literary events.

Watermark Books and Cafe

Watermark Books & Cafe is an independent bookstore in Witchita, Kansas. The Watermark Cafe serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner as well as a variety of pastries, cookies, and other treats. The bookstore hosts regular literary events and a variety of general and specialized book clubs, such as “French Book Club,” “Hot & Popular Book Club,” and “Longitude Book Club.”

Sandman Books

Sandman Books is an independent, locally-owned bookshop in Punta Gorda, Florida. The shop is the largest independent bookshop in southwest Florida and has over one hundred thousand used and new books in stock, as well as a selection of gifts, puzzles, games, and apparel. Their rare book room contains a variety of unusual titles, some of which date as far back as the 1600s.

Arundel Books

Arundel Books has been selling “Real Books for Real People” since 1984. The shop’s Seattle location is in the historic Pioneer Square and sells new, rare, and out-of-print books as well as a select, diverse stock that is constantly changing and growing. Apart from their retail bookstore, they also have an affiliated indie publishing company called Chatwin Books, and a book printing and binding operation that includes both digital printing and their own vintage letterpress printing press.

Louis Collins Books

Louis Collins Books specializes in out-of-print scholarly books, with an emphasis on history, art, and anthropology. The shop also locates out-of-print books for customers through their free book search service. They are open Monday through Friday, but prefer appointments if you plan a visit.
