Rainy Day Books is a full-line, full-service bookstore, carrying an array of carefully selected new books for adults and children alike. This bookstore hosts more than three hundred author events each year. Since Vivien Jennings first opened the doors in 1975, Rainy Day Books has provided the Greater Kansas City community with a gathering place, a wellspring for ideas and creative thought, and an ongoing voice for literacy and awareness.
Split Rock Books was founded in 2018 by Heidi and Michael Bender, a married couple. After over ten years working as booksellers (and in Michael’s case, as a librarian too!) in a variety of stores in New York City and beyond, they moved up to Cold Spring to open up their own store.
Split Rock carries a curated selection of new books with a focus on literary fiction and nonfiction, small presses, local interests, and children’s books. The shop hosts a variety of children’s and family programming, book clubs, readings, signings, and discussions.
Mother Foucault’s Bookshop is a serious book lover’s haven with a curated collection of literature, philosophy, literary criticism, foreign language books, and more. They regularly host literary events such as readings, talks, panels, and performances.
Powell’s Books on Hawthorne is a smaller, more relaxed counterpart to Powell’s City of Books flagship location. Located in the heart of Southeast Portland, Powell’s Books on Hawthorne covers more than 10,000 square feet of retail space and offers more than 200,000 used and new books. They host lively author readings several times each week in the Tabor Room, and the Kids’ Room is a popular family destination for both locals and out-of-towners.
This west side location of Powell’s Books at Cedar Hills Crossing provides an expansive setting for customers to explore over half a million used, new, and hard-to-find books across every category and genre. The bookstore also hosts popular author events, talks, and readings throughout the year.

Literati Bookstore is an independent bookstore in downtown Ann Arbor. Literati aims to be a place where book lovers can go, talk, and interact with each other. They host author readings, book clubs, poetry nights, and are open seven days a week.
This Barnes & Noble is located in the Arboretum Shopping Center, at the Southwest Corner of 183 and Great Hills Trail. Events include author readings, talks, and book signings.
Submissions are currently open for Passages North’s biennial fiction and short-short contests. Two prizes of $1,000 each and publication in Passages North are given for a short story and a short-short story, prose poem, nonfiction piece, or hybrid work.
To submit to the Waasnode Short Fiction Prize, using the online submission system submit a story of up to 10,000 words with a $15 entry fee. To submit to the Neutrino Short-Short Prize, using the online submission system submit up to 1,000 words of prose with a $15 entry fee. Anne Valente will judge the fiction contest and T. Fleischmann will judge the short-short contest. The deadline for both contests is April 15. All entries are considered for publication.
The 2016 winner of the Waasnode Short Fiction Prize was Alex McElroy for “Responsible Fear;” The 2016 winner of the Neutrino Short-Short Prize was Jonathan Escoffery for “In Flux.”
Established in 1979, Passages North is an annual literary journal published at Northern Michigan University. The journal’s 2019 literary prizes will be given in poetry and nonfiction. Visit the website for more information.
