Loyalty Bookstore: Silver Spring

Loyalty was founded by Hannah Oliver Depp, a Black and queer bookseller who has spent her career working to diversify the book industry in order for it to better serve the powerful communities of color and queerness. The independent bookstore has a diverse selection of books as well as unique stationery and gifts, and hosts literary events regularly throughout the year, both virtually and in collaboration with local businesses and the D.C. Public Library.

Loyalty Bookstore: Petworth

The independent bookstore has a diverse selection of books as well as unique stationery and gifts, and hosts literary events regularly throughout the year, both virtually and in collaboration with local businesses and the D.C. Public Library.

The Pop-Hop

The Pop-Hop is a mission-driven, multi-use community arts and education space. They sell new and used books and hundreds of items from local authors and artists. Their mission is to forge relationships with community partners to build a new creative ecosystem that amplifies marginalized voices, supports community growth, and empowers collective good works to build a healthier, more equitable neighborhood.

The Writer’s Block

The Writer’s Block is an independently owned bookstore that sells new books (poetry, fiction, nonfiction, art, history, science, children’s, and young adult), stationery, toys, and other unique gifts. Located in downtown Las Vegas, the bookstore has a coffee shop and hosts a young writers’ workshop for students ages five to eighteen. 

Paper Boat Booksellers

Paper Boat Booksellers has books for everyone, whether it is fiction, nonfiction, young reader, or a cookbook. The West Seattle shop is open Tuesday through Sunday and holds events throughout the year, including author readings, book clubs, and open mics.

Tubby & Coo’s Mid-City Book Shop

Tubby & Coo’s is a locally owned, progressive, nerdy new and used book shop and tabletop gaming store in Mid-City New Orleans. The book shop is named after the owner’s grandparents: Tubby & Coo, who grew up in the same neighborhood where the shop is located.

A niche genre fiction bookstore, they carry science fiction, fantasy, graphic novels, and children’s books. There is also a board game demo library of more than 250 games for customers to peruse.

KAN Books

Know Allegiance Nation Books, or KAN Books, is a bookstore dedicated to authors and artists of color in Michigan and around the globe. New and used fiction and nonfiction titles are available for children and adults. Located in the North End of Detroit, the shop also hosts open mics, and writing and self-publishing workshops for aspiring local writers.

Brazos Bookstore

Brazos Bookstore stocks contemporary and classic literature, nonfiction, art and architecture monographs, and books for children. They host numerous free book signing events in which readers can engage with emerging and established authors in person.

McNally Jackson Books: Seaport

The South Seaport location in lower Manhattan overlooks the East River and has two stories full of books—poetry, fiction, nonfiction, children’s, art—as well as magazines and stationary items. The bookstore hosts literary events regularly throughout the week.
