Book Soup

Book Soup is located on the world famous Sunset Strip in West Hollywood, California. The bookstore has been serving readers, writers, artists, rock and rollers, and celebrities since it was founded by Glenn Goldman in 1975. With over 60,000 titles, specializing in art, film, photography, music, controversial nonfiction, and literary fiction, the shop hosts author events and is open daily.

Carmichael’s Bookstore: Clifton/Crescent Hill

Carol Besse and Michael Boggs opened the first location of Carmichael’s Bookstore in 1978, and Carmichael’s has been owned and operated by them ever since. The branch on Frankfort Avenue opened in 2003 and hosts frequent author readings and signings, panel discussions, and other literary events.

Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing

The historic President’s Cottage on the Arizona State University Tempe Campus is the home of the Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing. Located on the corner of Palm Walk and Tyler Mall, the house was constructed in 1907 and served as the home of the university’s president until 1959. Since that time, it has been used by the ASU Alumni Association for administrative offices (1961–1972) and as the home of the University Archives (1972–1995). The house, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is especially fitting as a home for the Virginia G.

Literary Arts

Literary Arts is a community-based nonprofit literary center located in downtown Portland, with a thirty-year history of serving Oregon’s readers and writers. Programs include Portland Arts & Lectures, one of the country’s largest lecture series; Oregon Book Awards & Fellowships, which celebrates Oregon’s writers and independent publishers; and Writers in the Schools, which hires professional writers to teach semester-long creative writing workshops in Portland’s public high schools.

Brattle Book Shop

Brattle Book Shop is one of America’s oldest and largest used bookstores. It features two floors of general and used books, a third floor of rare and antiquarian books, and an outside sale lot. Brattle Books also hosts literary events.

Watermark Books and Cafe

Watermark Books & Cafe is an independent bookstore in Witchita, Kansas. The Watermark Cafe serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner as well as a variety of pastries, cookies, and other treats. The bookstore hosts regular literary events and a variety of general and specialized book clubs, such as “French Book Club,” “Hot & Popular Book Club,” and “Longitude Book Club.”

The Last Bookstore

The Last Bookstore opened in 2005 in a loft in downtown Los Angeles. It is now the largest independent bookstore in California, with over 250,000 new and used books. A record shop and coffee bar fill out the ground floor and their calendar has many music and literary events.

Unnameable Books is a bookstore located in the heart of Prospect Heights, Brooklyn. Founded as “Adam’s Books” before being renamed, the store specializes in poetry, has an eclectic collection of used books, and carries work from many small independent presses.

powerHouse Arena

The powerHouse Arena—a self-proclaimed laboratory for creative thought—is a gallery, boutique, bookstore, performance, and events space located in Brooklyn’s Dumbo neighborhood. The space is home to the art book publisher, powerHouse Books, and hosts book launch parties, readings and signings, and conversations for a host of voices in contemporary literature. The store carries a curated selection of design and photography books, along with a discriminating selection of nonfiction, lifestyle, illustrated, and New York-themed books.
