Spoonbill & Sugartown, Booksellers was established in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Williamsburg in 1999. The shop specializes in used, rare, and new books on contemporary art, architecture, and various design fields with an emphasis on imported or hard-to-find selections. Thousands of books are hand-picked for clientele from the eclectic collection of philosophy, literature, cinema, and children’s books.
In 2009, Rebecca Fitting and Jessica Stockon Bagnulo opened Greenlight Bookstore in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, with the support of the Fort Greene Association and a Community Lender Program. This independent bookstore carries a robust selection in a wide variety of genres, and has a full calendar of events for adults and children.
Shakespeare & Co. is an iconic Manhattan bookstore in the Upper East Side neighborhood founded in 1983. The store is adjacent to the Hunter College campus and includes a high-quality café. Their second location is in the Upper West Side on Broadway.
An established downtown Manhattan institution, the Housing Works Bookstore Cafe is staffed almost entirely by volunteers and one hundred percent of profits go to Housing Works—a healing community of people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS whose mission is to end the dual crises of homelessness and AIDS through relentless advocacy, the provision of lifesaving services, and entrepreneurial businesses that sustain their efforts. They carry an extensive book, movie, and music selection, host special events, and have a fully stocked cafe.
With the strong support of the Morningside Heights community and the faculty and administration of Columbia University, Book Culture is a true community bookstore. Founded in 1997, the store features new and classic fiction and nonfiction, cookbooks, mystery novels, graphic novels, home and craft books, and travel guides. They host numerous readings and literary events throughout the year. The bookstore has four locations, including two in Manhattan, one in Long Island City, and one in Pittsford, New York.
192 Books is a general interest bookstore in the Chelsea neighborhood featuring recent titles and past best-sellers, as well as selected rare and out-of-print books, on a variety of subjects, including literary fiction, art and photography, history and biography, natural history and science, works in translation, film, poetry, music, and current affairs. 192 Books hosts art exhibitions and an extensive series of readings by distinguished writers and artists, signings, group readings, discussions, and a weekly story hour for children at eleven each Wednesday.
The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, the central library of the Distric of Columbia Public Library, opened on August 21, 1972. Designated a historic landmark on June 28, 2007, the city's central library houses public service areas, including subject divisions, meeting rooms and exhibition space, as well as the administrative and support services for all public libraries in Washington, D.C. The library hosts literary events throughout the year.
Folger Shakespeare Library is home to the world's largest collection of Shakespeare materials, as well as major collections of other rare Renaissance books, manuscripts, and works of art. The Folger serves a wide audience of researchers, visitors, teachers, students, families, and theater-and concert-goers.
Boulder Book Store is the largest independent bookstore in Boulder, Colorado. It hosts more than two hundred events every year. Authors who have visited over the years include Christopher Moore, Joyce Carol Oates, Deepak Chopra, Garrison Keillor, Jon Krakauer, Mitch Albom, David Sedaris, Elizabeth Gilbert, Michael Pollan, Chelsea Handler, Neil Gaiman, and Terry Prachett.
The Sacramento Poetry Center is a nonprofit literary center that offers readings, workshops, poetry contests, publications, and lectures. The center is not affiliated with any college or university, provides most of its services for free, and also houses a library, runs an annual conference, and participates in the community with outreach and fundraising for fellow nonprofits.
