A prize of $1,000 and publication in Gulf Coast is given in alternating years for a group of poems or a prose excerpt translated from any language into English. The 2024 prize will be given for a single poem. Submit up to 10 pages of poetry translated into English, a copy of the original text, a brief bio of the author, a synopsis of the work being translated, and proof of permission to translate the work with a $20 entry fee, which includes a subscription to Gulf Coast, by August 31. American-Scandinavian Foundation

A prize of $2,500 and publication of an excerpt in Scandinavian Review is given annually for an English translation of a work of poetry, fiction, or creative nonfiction written in a Nordic language (Danish, Faroese, Finnish, Greenlandic, Icelandic, Norwegian, Sami, or Swedish). A prize of $2,000 and publication is also awarded annually to a translator whose literary translations from a Nordic language have not previously been published. An additional prize of $2,000 and publication is awarded for a Danish translation. Translations of works by 20th- and 21st-century Nordic authors that have not been published in English are eligible. Using only the online submission system, submit 15 to 25 pages of poetry in translation or 25 to 50 pages of prose in translation, a copy of the original work, a statement about the original author and the significance of their work, a document signed by or on behalf of the author granting permission for the translation to be entered into the competition, and a curriculum vitae by September 1. Nobel Prize Interview With Jon Fosse

“I think that literature is really needed, and art in general. It’s saying something that cannot be said in any other way, and that’s why you do it.” In this interview, Norwegian author Jon Fosse, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2023, talks about how music inspired him to write at a young age, and how pauses and silences are used to generate rhythm in his work.

MacDowell

MacDowell offers residencies of up to six weeks year-round to poets, fiction writers, creative nonfiction writers, and translators on 450 wooded acres near Mt. Monadnock in Peterborough, New Hampshire. Residents are provided with a private studio and work space, as well as access to the James Baldwin Library. Stipends and travel reimbursement grants are available based on financial need. For residencies from September 2025 through February 2026, submit 6 to 10 poems (totaling no more than 15 pages) or 15 to 20 pages of prose and a project proposal with a $30 application fee by February 10.

Desert Nights, Rising Stars Writers Conference

The Desert Nights, Rising Stars Writers Conference, sponsored by the Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing at Arizona State University (ASU), was held from October 10 to October 12 at the Memorial Union community center on the university’s campus in Tempe, Arizona. The theme for the 2024 conference was “Craft. Culture. Community.” Programming included craft talks, classes, generative workshops, panels, readings, and events focused on the business of writing for poets, fiction writers, nonfiction writers, and translators.

Homero Aridjis and George McWhirter: Self-Portrait in the Zone of Silence

Caption: 

“On the wall of the room there was a mirror / reflecting back a comical skull that was laughing at itself.” In this bilingual poetry reading, “Self-Portrait in the Zone of Silence” is read in the original Spanish by Homero Aridjis and the English translation is read by George McWhirter. Aridjis and McWhirter won the 2024 Griffin Poetry Prize for the collection of the same name, published by New Directions.

Guanajuato Writing Retreat

The Guanajuato Writing Retreat was held from September 22 to September 29 at the Florecer Casitas in Guanajuato, the hilly capital city of Guanajuato state, in Mexico’s high plateau region. The theme for the 2024 retreat was “Renewing Ourselves.” Programming (limited to eight writers) included workshops, a reading with local writers, guided exploratory writing sessions led by poet Bonnie Wolkenstein, local excursions to destinations including La Cañada de la Virgen, and independent time to write for poets, fiction writers, creative nonfiction writers, and translators.
