Visual Arts Center of Richmond

The Visual Arts Center of Richmond (VACR) offers an 11-month residency from September 1, 2024, to July 31, 2025, to a poet, fiction writer, or nonfiction writer at the Virginia Dairy building in Richmond’s historic Fan District. Writers who have not yet published a full-length book, are not currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program, and can commit to spending at least 20 hours per week in the studio are eligible. The residency includes private studio space, an honorarium of $5,000, and a $500 budget for materials.

Disability Poetics: Cyrée Jarelle Johnson

In this video for the Disability Poetics series, Cyrée Jarelle Johnson speaks about the intersection between disability and enslavement, and reads his poem “Eating the Other,” which appears in his second poetry collection, Watchnight (Nightboat Books, 2024). A prize of $25,000 is given annually for a poetry collection by a living poet published in the United States during the previous year. The winner also receives a 10-day residency at the Glen Hollow cottage in Naples, New York. Copies of the winning book are distributed to approximately 200 members of the Academy of American Poets. Self-published books are not eligible. Using only the online submission system, U.S. publishers may submit a PDF of a book of at least 48 pages published in 2023 with a $75 entry fee by May 15. Hillary Gravendyk Prizes

Tremont Writers Conference

The Tremont Writers Conference was held from October 23 to October 27 at the Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont in a secluded campus in Townsend, Tennessee. The conference featured workshops, author readings, and craft talks for poets, fiction writers, and nonfiction writers, as well as outdoor activities, including hikes and campfires. Creative writers who were age 18 and over were eligible. The faculty included poet Maurice Manning, fiction writer Monic Ductan, and nonfiction writer David Brill. Frank X Walker was a guest poet.
